How to Crochet – Step 1

Crochet is a versatile craft that creates fabric by interlocking loops of yarn with a hook. With these simple tools crocheters can use fundamental crochet stitches, which when combined can create various textures and patterns.

The following are fundamental crochet stitches along with brief instructions on how to do them:

• Chain Stitch (ch):
  How to do it: Make a slipknot, insert the hook into the loop, yarn over (wrap the yarn around the hook), and pull through the loop. This creates one chain stitch.

• Single Crochet (sc):
  How to do it: Insert the hook into the desired stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (two loops on the hook), yarn over again, and pull through both loops on the hook.
  
• Half Double Crochet (hdc):
  How to do it: Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over again, pull up a loop (three loops on the hook), yarn over once more, and pull through all three loops on the hook.

• Double Crochet (dc):How to do it: Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through the first two loops (two loops remaining on the hook), yarn over again, and pull through the remaining two loops.

• Treble Crochet (tr):
  How to do it: Yarn over twice, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (four loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through the first two loops (three loops remaining), yarn over and pull through the next two loops (two loops remaining), yarn over once more and pull through the last two loops.
